Cutting Speed and Feed Calculator (Turning and Milling)

Convert between cutting speed and spindle rpm, compute table feed from feed per tooth or per revolution, and estimate material removal rate and cutting time. Covers both milling and turning in metric units.

How to use this calculator

  1. Pick the process and whether you know surface speed Vc or spindle rpm.
  2. Enter the cutter or workpiece diameter and the speed value.
  3. Enter feed per tooth (milling) or per revolution (turning) plus depth of cut for MRR and cutting time.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Vc to rpm?

n = 1000 x Vc / (pi x D) with D in millimetres and Vc in m/min. A 100 mm cutter at 200 m/min runs at 637 rpm.

What cutting speeds should I use?

Typical starting points in m/min: HSS in mild steel 20 to 40, coated carbide in steel 100 to 300, carbide in aluminium 300 to 1000. Always start at the low end of the tool maker's window and increase.

Why is my actual feed per tooth higher than fz at low radial engagement?

Chip thinning. When the radial width of cut is small relative to the cutter diameter, the chip is thinner than fz. Compensate by raising the table feed so the chip reaches its target thickness.
